Flip (formerly Flipgrid) is an online tool that can be used to promote video discussions. Flip allows students to share videos and engage in open and fluid discussions with their peers. Students can reply to the teacher’s prompt or video and also to other classmates’ video discussions. A teacher can create a group and share the link or QR code with students or parents for them to join the conversation. In the group, the teacher can create several discussion prompts for a variety of topics. Flip is free and can be accessed in a web browser or through a smartphone or tablet application.
Flip is an online tool that promotes video discussion in face-to-face, blended, or online classes where students work from digital devices such as smartphones, tablets, or laptops. Teachers can form groups within Flip to organize students in classes. Students can directly respond to the teacher’s prompts or to their classmates’ videos. Teachers can create stand-alone discussion topics, where students watch videos and reply to discussion posts. Teachers can opt to moderate student response or disable student-student responses. Teachers can provide students with access to student groups or discussions topics by sharing a link, a QR code, or a join code. Discussion videos can range from 15-seconds to 10-minutes in duration. Teachers can also use the tool to encourage family engagement in the learning process.
Flip can be used to showcase projects, discuss topics, or keep families up to date with important dates, events, or curriculum content. Flip provides options for backgrounds, filters, frames, and stickers. These features have a potential to enhance teacher and student experience when they create their videos. FlipAR allows teachers to use augmented reality features in their videos. For example, teachers can include student videos in a FlipAR environment to give parents a virtual experience of viewing their children’s video presentations. This virtual environment can be shared with a link or QR code through email, LMS messaging, or other communication applications.
Flip is committed to ensuring that the platform is safe and accessible for all users. Flip’s features make the tool accessible to people with different abilities by including editable close captions, member-generated transcripts, text in the videos, and Immersive Reader for read-aloud or translation. Users can also navigate through the tool by using the keyboard and access the content through a screen reader. Flip is appropriate for the inclusion of parents and students who do not speak English or are learning English, as users have access to captions and translation. The captions and translation features can also be used to include and engage non-English speaking students in the classroom. Flip has incorporated a lens to teach students American Sign Language (ASL). This lens tracks the student’s hand movements to show if the letter is correct. Students can also use their ASL to write words as part of their videos.
Flip can be used with students of all ages. Parent consent is required for people under the age of 18 including children. For the students under the age of 13, a School Lead has to agree to Flip’s terms and make sure parents have granted their consent in accordance with COPPA and FERPA. School Leads are required to submit and keep records of such consents and respond to any concerns from parents. A teacher can password protect a discussion topic, Flip group, or FlipAR environment as a way to protect student information and content from users who are not part of the group. For example, in a FlipAR environment in which student videos are included, the teacher can set a password and share it with parents exclusively in order to limit access to student content.
Flip collects personal information from its users, but it does not sell user information to third-parties.
