Loom is a screen recording tool that lets users record audio, video, browser windows, or entire screens in a Chrome extension, desktop app, or mobile app. Teachers can download the desktop app or create a Chrome extension to record a video. Students can access Loom anywhere and at any time without the need to create an account for the tool. Loom also helps teachers to create simple instruction videos. Registration with Loom for Education is free for both students and teachers.
A teacher can use Loom to record the picture and sound from their camera and/or screen simultaneously with three different options, including screen and camera, screen only, or camera only. A comment section is provided for students to share their comments and questions for the uploaded recordings. With Loom, a teacher can centralize the information on one platform with content videos that are easy to find. A teacher can provide students with access to specific class content regardless of the students’ location. A teacher can also use their screen and camera to show and explain what they teach to clarify key points for their students. Providing context is key to getting the message across, especially when dealing with a complicated or nuanced idea or concept.
A teacher can use Loom to replace long emails and instant messages and increase engagement for their students. Loom videos can be shared directly through the platform or pasted into documents as video comments. Loom links can be pasted directly into emails, instant or text messages. Additionally, teachers can make announcements with the tool’s recorded video updates. A teacher can also monitor student engagement with a specific shared video.
In accordance with COPPA and FERPA, children under 13 should not use Loom and may only watch teacher-created videos. Students can watch Loom videos with no subscription. The tool’s videos can be downloaded as MP4 files and shared through a secured cloud service (Office 365 or Google) by a teacher. As long as the video is shared through the teacher’s account, all ages of students would be able to access them. To use Loom for free, as an educator, a teacher needs to register to the platform with their school email and fill out the following document to get verified: Loom for Education- Verification Request. The security and privacy of the videos can be provided by adding a password to the video. A teacher will record a video and make it accessible for only those who have the link and the password.
Loom has limited accessibility for special population students. Loom only supports the English language, and the students whose native language is not English may experience challenges navigating the tool or understanding the English-language video content. Loom cannot be used without a mouse and does not have a voice control option.
